Morocco to Implement Tax on Airbnb and Vacation Rental Properties

Owners of properties rented out on platforms like AirBnb will soon have to pay up, as the state is currently finalizing the last details of a new tax.
This measure follows complaints from industry professionals, particularly hoteliers, recalls the website Médias24, who had called for regulating the sector of booking and renting vacation homes.
To this end, the government plans to set up an electronic platform under the Ministry of Tourism that will aim to list all rental properties and their owners for the purpose of paying taxes.
The government is going further, as only persons registered and identified on this platform will be able to rent out their properties. Furthermore, the State intends to raise the quality of these properties by requiring the owner to comply with certain criteria such as hygiene and comfort, not to mention the safety of the occupants.
The date of the implementation of this new tax has not yet been set, but a source within the Ministry of Tourism suggests the end of the first half of the year.
