Morocco to Implement New Regulations for E-Scooters and Electric Bikes

New texts aimed at regulating the use of electric scooters and pedal-assisted bicycles in Morocco are in the process of being adopted, said Mohamed Abdeljalil, the Minister of Transport and Logistics.
"Two draft decrees amending and supplementing Decrees No. 2.10.421 relating to vehicles and No. 2.10.420 on the rules of road traffic have been developed and are in the process of approval, in response to the emergence of new means of transport on public roads," announced Mohamed Abdeljalil, during a recent meeting at the House of Representatives. These texts target in particular electric scooters and pedal-assisted bicycles, reports the magazine L’Observateur du Maroc et d’Afrique.
"These draft decrees precisely define the notions of motorized personal mobility vehicle and pedal-assisted bicycle. They also specify the technical conditions and characteristics of these devices, as well as the traffic rules that will apply to them, in accordance with the requirements of road safety and the protection of users," details the publication, adding that the two texts in the process of approval also emphasize safety requirements such as wearing a helmet and speed limits.
"Local authorities have already begun to apply strict measures against users of modified electric scooters. The relevant services are seizing scooters that do not comply with safety standards, particularly those exceeding the speed limit of 40 km/h or whose users do not wear a helmet," informs the magazine. The objective is to raise awareness among users about safety rules and to encourage responsible use of electric scooters in order to ensure their safety on the roads and reduce the number of accidents.
