Morocco's Hotel Quarantine Policy Backfires as COVID Clusters Emerge

The quarantine imposed on Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) or foreign tourists coming from countries classified on list B has proven ineffective. Several malfunctions have been recorded. Clusters have even been discovered in some hotels.

Hotel establishments hosting MREs and tourists from countries classified on list B have turned into active epidemic hotspots, reports Assabah. Several travelers tested positive for Covid-19 after a 10-day quarantine. Yet they had presented a PCR test of less than 48 hours upon boarding.

This situation is explained by the dysfunctions related to the quarantine in certain hotels. It was found that tourists, especially those from some Gulf countries, leave their room or receive visitors without any respect for the health protocol in place. The restaurants of some of these hotels are teeming with people, and health prevention and physical distancing measures are trampled underfoot. Parties are even organized at late hours.

To show the extent of the disorder that is setting in in hotels dedicated to quarantine, the Arabic-language newspaper talks about an MRE from a Gulf country who had posted a video on social networks. In this video, we see his movements in the city accompanied by his child. A woman from Saudi Arabia also deplored the situation. She wonders if the quarantine is useful. Based on these findings, many MREs have asked the competent authorities to allow them to observe the 10-day quarantine in their family.
