Morocco’s Homegrown Ventilator ’iVENT’ Enters Clinical Trials

Morocco will soon be able to boast of having a reliable artificial ventilator. The Institute of Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN) announced the finalization of the Moroccan artificial ventilator iVENT. After a series of checks, the ventilator is currently undergoing clinical tests by researchers before being put on the market.
The Moroccan artificial ventilator iVENT is a reliable and affordable equipment, with more than 80% locally manufactured components, which will support the health system, the Institute said in a press release. It is the result of the fruitful collaboration between Moroccan researchers from the Institute of Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN), the startups eDEEP / eSMART, and the Higher Normal School of Technical Education of the Mohammed V University (ENSET). After the ongoing tests, the homologation procedures for this medical device will take place.
The same press release emphasizes that the final version of the artificial ventilator is equipped with an electronic card and complies with the standards and functionalities required by health professionals. These are the 4 ventilation modes that ensure controlled ventilation and spontaneous ventilation to assist patients’ inspiration. These are controlled assisted ventilation (VCV), intermittent controlled assisted volume (VCV-I), spontaneous ventilation (VS) and apnea backup allowing automatic switching to VCV-I, the press release specifies.
This artificial ventilator is also equipped with sensors to detect anomalies. It is adapted to the needs of people suffering from respiratory failure. In the perspective of ventilator production, the researchers have forged partnerships with industrialists and financiers. The same option has also been adopted for the development of capacities and know-how transfer with sub-Saharan countries.
