Morocco’s holdings of U.S. debt jump by more than $1 billion in four months

At the end of August 2026, U.S. public debt securities held from Morocco totaled exactly $4.906 billion, up from $4.777 billion a month earlier. The figures come from the Treasury International Capital (TIC) program, published by the U.S. Treasury and cited by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

The increase has been particularly pronounced since spring. Holdings stood at $3.846 billion in April, $4.181 billion in May, and then $4.603 billion in June. Over four months, they therefore rose by $1.06 billion, or 27.6%.

$130 million in net purchases in August

U.S. statistics also detail financial flows. In August, investors based in Morocco made net purchases of $130 million in U.S. Treasury securities, according to a second Fed series. These purchases amounted to $179 million in July and $430 million in June.

Treasury securities are bonds and bills issued by Washington to finance its public debt. Their value changes in part with interest rates and transactions on financial markets. U.S. statistics measure these holdings at market value.

The country ranking is based on the residence of the securities’ holders. The $4.906 billion therefore represents positions attributed to Morocco in U.S. statistics, which cover different categories of investors, not just the Moroccan central bank.
