Morocco’s imports from the US outpace exports by more than 3 to 1
Trade between Morocco and the United States is accelerating, but Moroccan purchases are growing faster than sales. From January to July 2026, the kingdom imported $4.07 billion in US goods and exported $1.24 billion to that market.

The ratio stands at $3.29 in purchases for every dollar in sales, according to data from the Census Bureau. Over seven months, trade in goods between the two countries totaled $5.3 billion, up about 22.5% from the same period in 2025.

Moroccan companies nevertheless increased their sales to the United States by 14.2%. But in the other direction, US shipments rose by 25.2%. This difference in growth rates pushed Morocco’s trade deficit to $2.83 billion, compared with about $2.17 billion a year earlier.
Trade ties are therefore benefiting both flows, with the kingdom’s purchases rising much faster. In July, the United States sold $686.3 million worth of goods to Morocco, while buying $185.3 million worth from the country. In that month alone, the gap exceeded $500 million.
Twenty years of free trade, but the imbalance persists
This gap is part of a long-standing trade relationship. The free trade agreement signed in June 2004 took effect on January 1, 2006. It gradually eliminated tariffs on most goods traded between the two countries.
The Office of the US Trade Representative notes that Morocco immediately eliminated tariffs on 95% of industrial and consumer products. Phased reductions later led to the removal of tariffs on most goods in 2016, with separate schedules for some sensitive agricultural products.
Computer equipment, machinery, construction equipment, chemicals and textiles are among the US sectors benefiting from preferential access to the Moroccan market. The agreement facilitates trade without ensuring it is balanced.
The previous annual figures already showed this imbalance. In 2025, the United States shipped about $5.5 billion worth of goods to Morocco and bought $1.9 billion worth of Moroccan products. Its surplus reached around $3.7 billion.
Trade in services is more balanced. According to the USTR, services trade totaled about $2.2 billion in 2025, with a US surplus of $119 million. Morocco’s deficit with the United States was therefore concentrated mainly in goods.
