Morocco’s Historic Cherry Festival Canceled Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

The urban commune of Sefrou was to vibrate in June with the colors of the 100th edition of the cherry festival. But due to the crisis linked to the coronavirus pandemic, the organizers have announced its outright cancellation.
The Serfou cherry festival is an initiative of the "Karaze" foundation, in partnership with the urban commune of Serfou. Among other objectives, it aims "to strengthen the cultural animation of the city and to preserve the local intangible heritage". The June 2020 edition should have celebrated the centenary of the festival, but unfortunately, the health crisis has forced the event to be canceled.
Considered the dean of Moroccan festivals, this event is "the fifth Moroccan cultural heritage inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List, after the cultural space of Jemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech, the Tan-Tan Moussem, the Mediterranean diet and falconry, a living human heritage".
In addition to the cherry festival, two other festivals have also been canceled. These are the Serfou cultural forum and the city’s popular arts festival.
