Morocco Hikes Cigarette Prices Again as Import Duties Surge

The retail price of cigarette packs has increased for the second time in less than two years. The new rates came into effect on Thursday, August 6, following an increase in import duties.
Following the adoption of the new 2020 Finance Act amendment, import duties on several consumer products have increased by 30 to 40%.
Manufactured tobacco, whose rates were published on August 5 in the customs administration circular, has not escaped the increase. This has been reflected in premium products, including Winston and Marlboro.
In 2019, the increase in the Domestic Consumption Tax (TIC) was absorbed by the 3 main operators in Morocco, to avoid a strong impact on the public price.
