Morocco's Hakimi Expresses Disappointment Over Early AFCON Exit

Achraf Hakimi has not yet recovered from Morocco’s elimination in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. He made this known during an interview with the Spanish newspaper Marca.

During this interview, Hakimi addressed not only his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021), but also his journey with Paris Saint-Germain. Regarding AFCON, the Moroccan right-back said he was disappointed that Morocco was eliminated at this stage of the competition. "I feel bitterness, especially since we had prepared well for AFCON. I was very enthusiastic and motivated to help the national team achieve good results in this competition. But it’s really a shame that we were eliminated. I’m sad, but also happy with the work we’ve done," he told the Spanish daily Marca.

Scorer of two goals that were unanimously acclaimed during this AFCON, he said he was surprised by the level displayed by the Comoros and certain players who emerged as key players for their respective teams during this Africa Cup of Nations. "The Comoros team made a name for itself during this competition. They qualified for the round of 16 for the first time in their history and played against Cameroon without their goalkeeper. I met them at the hotel and congratulated them on their brilliant run. There were also revelations during this AFCON like my teammates Nayef Aguerd, Ryan Mmaee, a very good striker, and the Ghanaian left-back Kamaldeen Sulemana," he stressed.

Regarding his experience with Paris Saint-Germain, the former Inter Milan player said he feels very comfortable there. "It’s like home. All the players welcomed me well. I felt affection even before I arrived in Paris. The coach also trusts me, so it motivates me to give my best. I’m lucky to play with great players like Messi and Neymar. It allows me to learn new things every day," he said.

As for the appreciations made by his teammate and friend Kylian Mbappé on social networks during his unforgettable free kick in the round of 16 against Malawi, the 23-year-old player confided that he was very touched by it. "Mbappé’s gesture made me feel great satisfaction. Because I see that I am delivering good performances. Kylian is also a mirror in which I can look at myself."

PSG face Real Madrid on Tuesday in the Champions League round of 16. For Hakimi, the goal is to tighten the ranks to reach the next round of the Champions League, especially since the Parisians are facing a team with one of the best offensive lines in the world. "Real’s attackers have an excellent level like Benzema and Vinicius and even their midfield has experienced players like Modric and Casemeiro. It’s a great team to respect. But it will be a 50%-50% match," he predicted.
