Morocco Grapples with Soaring Food Prices Amid Global Supply Challenges

The government has reacted to the social tension linked to the dizzying rise in prices of basic necessities, admitting that this situation should persist, but that the country will not experience a food crisis.
Speaking at the press conference following the government council, Mustapha Baitas specified that "the situation in October was ’normal’ before the costs of food and basic products experienced a dizzying rise", attributing the deterioration to the war between Ukraine and Russia.
For Baitas "the impacts of this conflict on Morocco are real", stressing that the region experiencing the crisis is a strategic hub for global food production, referring to the predominant role of Russia and Ukraine in supplying many countries with raw materials, including vital foods.
However, the royal instructions have allowed the government to develop an approach aimed at preserving the national food stocks, he said.
