Morocco Fuel Prices Stable Despite Rumors of Increase, Industry Official Says

Faced with rumors of a likely increase in fuel prices, the president of the National Federation of Free Owners, Merchants and Managers of Service Stations in Morocco (FNPCGSS), Jamal Zrikem, provided a formal denial.

In Rabat, fuel prices this weekend are still around 11.09 DH for gasoline and 9.89 DH for diesel. According to the president of the FNPCGSS, the price structure is determined by the distribution companies that offer the recommended prices for the stations. These stations do not intervene in the determination of prices. The profit margin of the stations has remained unchanged for decades, explains the official to article19.ma.

According to him, the profit margin of the service stations is limited and does not significantly affect the prices. The president argues that the stations have always been on the side of the consumer, by proposing, during meetings with the authorities, formulas to maintain price stability.

Furthermore, he attests that the price increase has always been "detrimental to the interests of service station owners, given the profit margins, calculated in cents", specifying that price fluctuations pose problems for service station professionals in their dealings with the tax authorities.

However, he acknowledges having undertaken, on several occasions, steps with his association with the Ministry of Energy and Mines, with a view to taking protective measures in favor of the stations and consumers following "a slight increase on the international market due to the improvement of trade relations between the United States and China". Brent crude has recorded an increase of about 35 cents to reach $68.39 per barrel, he added.
