Morocco’s Fuel Prices Drop Slower Than Global Trends, Minister Explains

Questioned by Idriss Sentissi, president of the Mouvement populaire (MP) group in Parliament, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Economy and Finance, explains that fuel prices in Morocco are (almost) following global trends.
Fuel prices in Morocco "have not decreased at the same pace as the declines recorded globally since the beginning of 2024". This emerges from the written response of Nadia Fettah Alaoui. "The average price of diesel nationwide has fallen by 1.70 dirhams per liter, a 13% drop between January and the end of September" while the average price of diesel on the international market went from $782 per tonne in January to $667 in September, a 15% decrease, the minister specified.
As for gasoline, the national average price has recorded a drop of 98 cents per liter, a 7% reduction over the same period, while the price has recorded a 9% drop on the international market. On the other hand, international prices "have experienced occasional increases in the first two weeks of October due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East," Alaoui said, noting that the average price of a barrel of Brent reached $78 over this period, compared to a range oscillating between $72 and $74 in September.
The minister did not fail to mention the role assigned to the Competition Council in monitoring the competitiveness of the fuel distribution sector. In accordance with its decision rendered in 2023, "the Council carries out regular monitoring of this market and publishes, every three months, a detailed report on the evolution of the sector and the degree of correlation between national and international prices," she also said.
