Morocco’s Freight Transport Sector Struggles Amid COVID-19 Crisis

The health crisis has not spared any sector of activity in Morocco. In the freight transport sector, professionals report a sharp drop in their activity and remain very pessimistic about a rapid recovery in the sector.
The health crisis related to the coronavirus has had repercussions on the social and economic conditions of freight transport professionals. They even fear the worst if the situation does not improve soon. The decline in the activity of this vital sector has been very notable in recent months due to the lockdown and restrictive measures imposed by the authorities in the fight against the spread of the virus.
In Casablanca, dozens of trucks are parked along the commercial district of Derb Omar. The truckers remain there in the hope of making an uncertain delivery. They do not hesitate, moreover, to undercut their service to bring in cash.
The sector was nevertheless very profitable and prosperous before the Covid-19 pandemic. The trip to Agadir for example used to bring in up to 2,500 dirhams, but currently, the same journey is done at 1,000 dirhams if you eventually get a delivery, says A. Hussein, a professional driver.
Despite the partial lifting of restrictive measures in Morocco, the sector has not seen significant changes. Some truckers are even considering selling their trucks and changing jobs. Others still have faith in the future and hope for better days, reports panorapost.com.
