US-Morocco Free Trade Agreement Marks 15 Years, Boosting Bilateral Trade to $3.3 Billion

It has been exactly 15 years since the United States and Morocco signed the free trade agreement. On June 7, the American Chamber of Commerce in Morocco (AmCham Morocco) and the U.S. Mission to Morocco celebrated this event at the residence of the U.S. Consul General, Villa Mirador.

During this ceremony, David Greene, the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Morocco and Guest Speaker of the ceremony, affirmed that since the signing of this agreement between the two countries in 2004, trade exchanges have been multiplied by five. Bilateral trade has seen a considerable increase, reaching $3.3 billion in 2020, compared to $925 million in 2005. Thus, Morocco currently occupies the 55th largest export market for American products.

Thanks to this commercial dynamic, thousands of jobs have been created, thus fostering the economic development of Morocco and the USA. Not to mention that the many American companies established in Morocco fully accompany the development of the strategic industry and place Morocco in the global supply chain, in advanced and complex markets. It should be noted that only 20 countries have signed free trade agreements with the United States and Morocco is the only African country on this list.

It should be noted that this economic and commercial agreement includes, among other sectors, the trade in goods including agricultural and fishery products, industrial products including textiles and clothing, services such as financial and telecommunications services, as well as public procurement. It also includes aspects related to the protection of intellectual property, the environment and labor.
