Morocco’s Foreign Minister: Spain’s Sahara Stance Part of Global Shift

Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, comments on Spain’s change of position on the Sahara. He believes that the Spanish position is part of an international movement.
"I think it’s a simplistic perception, the Spanish position is part of a movement that is observed at the level of the United Nations, which is observed at the European, African and Arab levels," reacted the head of Moroccan diplomacy, in an interview granted to RFI during which the journalist suggested that some believe that Spain had changed its position on the Sahara issue because of the migration issue. "The first time Spain marked a positive appreciation of the autonomy initiative dates, I think, to 2008. Those who want to create this shortcut do not want to see a reality, that there is an international movement," recalled Nasser Bourita.
According to him, those who continue to defend these outdated options are a small minority "who want to exploit the Sahara issue to prolong a detrimental status quo to regional stability, since we are talking about separatism and terrorism, feed terrorist movements with elements that are armed, that are not structured, and that is the danger today for regional stability, investing in separatism is to feed terrorism".
