Morocco’s Food Prices Drop Amid Lockdown, HCP Reports

It was predictable. The lockdown period imposed on Moroccans has led to a drop in prices in the majority of Moroccan cities, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
In an information note on the CPI for May 2020, the institution noted that this variation is the result of a 0.6% drop in the index of food products and a 0.1% increase in the index of non-food products.
According to the same note, the declines in food products observed between April and May 2020 mainly concern "vegetables" with 2.5%, "fish and seafood" and "fruits" with 0.6%, "meats" with 0.5%, "milk, cheese and eggs" with 0.2% and "oils and fats" with 0.1%. As for "coffee, tea and cocoa", "sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery", their prices also increased by 0.1%.
Regarding non-food products, the decline affected in particular the prices of "fuels" with 0.9%. In detail, the largest drops in the CPI were recorded in Beni-Mellal with 0.9%, in Kenitra with 0.8%, in Rabat, Tangier and Errachidia with 0.4%, in Dakhla and Safi with 0.3% and in Casablanca and Fez with 0.2%. As for the increases, they were recorded in Al-Hoceima with 0.6% and in Tetouan with 0.4%.
