EU-Morocco Fisheries Agreement Set to Expire, Renewal Uncertain

The fisheries agreement between the European Union (EU) and Morocco, which concerns European vessels including 92 Spanish ones, expires on July 17. Will it be renewed?
According to information provided by the European Commission, there is currently no plan to renegotiate this agreement. It is awaiting the verdict of the Court of Justice of the EU, expected by the end of the year.
Since it came into force on July 18, 2019, this agreement has allowed the EU fleet to resume its activities, which were suspended since July 14, 2018. But in 2021, the General Court of the EU annulled the Council’s decision approving the fisheries agreement and its protocol, while preserving its effects until the CJEU rules on the appeals filed by the Council and the Commission against the General Court’s decision, reports Europa Press.
"The agreement expires this summer. Technical meetings are ongoing. When the time comes to open the file, we will see what happens, but we are ready for any scenario," said Mohamed Sadiki, Moroccan Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, in April.
