Morocco’s Film Industry Booms: Foreign Productions Generate Record $110 Million Revenue

Revenues from foreign film shoots in Morocco have seen a strong increase.
The diversity of landscapes, between mountains, desert, sea and historic monuments, in addition to modern infrastructure for film production and qualified human resources, make Morocco a popular destination for many international producers and filmmakers, who choose to shoot their artistic productions in several cities of the kingdom. And these shoots are recording record revenues. Revenues from foreign film shoots in Morocco have increased this year, reaching 1.109 billion dirhams, the highest figure recorded since 2015, according to the Moroccan Cinematographic Center (CCM).
With a budget of 306 million dirhams, the American-British film "Gladiator II" by director Ridley Scott tops the list of foreign productions that have made the largest investments in Morocco. It is followed by the English series "Atomic" (150 million dirhams). The German series "The Terminal List" ranks third with a budget of 125 million dirhams.
According to the CCM, the revenues of the 30 most profitable films (Moroccan and foreign) in Moroccan cinemas in 2023 reached 63 million dirhams. Moroccan films generated 29 million dirhams, and the rest is attributed to foreign films. With revenues of 8 million and 700 thousand dirhams, the Moroccan film Dados is at the top of the films screened in Moroccan cinemas in 2023. The American film "Barbie" follows with 4 million and 879 thousand dirhams. The Moroccan film Zouj takes third place with revenues of 4 million and 929 thousand dirhams, while Nayda, also a Moroccan film, occupies the fourth place with revenues of 4 million and 526 thousand dirhams.
