Morocco’s Film Industry Booms: Foreign Productions Generate $200 Million in 2022

The Moroccan film industry is picking up again since the lifting of health restrictions. According to the Secretary General of the Moroccan Cinematographic Center (CCM), Khalid Saidi, foreign shoots generated a turnover of 2 billion dirhams in 2022, more than double the previous year.
This turnover has exceeded the psychological threshold of one billion dirhams, compared to 800 million dirhams in 2019 before the crisis, 211 million dirhams in 2020 and 441 million dirhams in 2021. A great success for the CCM, which hopes to double this figure in 2023.
According to Khalid Saidi, this improvement in revenue is explained by the combination of several feature film projects whose shooting has already started or is scheduled for the coming months. He cites in particular three small shoots with a budget of 15 million dirhams each, a medium shoot of 60 million dirhams, another already underway with an investment of 110 million dirhams and finally, the shooting in May next of the sequel to Gladiator for a budget of 305 million dirhams, reports Medias24.
The first quarter of 2023 has already brought in more than 500 million dirhams, and the Secretary General expects a turnover of at least 700 million dirhams for the first half of this year alone. If this trend continues, last year’s turnover will be doubled.
Requests for feature film and series shoots continue to pour in, and ongoing negotiations between foreign production houses and Moroccan executive producers for major projects suggest a record year 2023 for the Moroccan film industry. "2023 will be the year of all records," concludes the CCM.
