Morocco’s Fès-Meknès Region to Construct 4 Major Dams, Boosting Water Storage Capacity

The Fès-Meknès region will host four major dams at a total cost of 6.7 billion dirhams. This is within the framework of the 2020-2027 National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program. This is the news delivered by Samira El Haouat, director of the Sebou Hydraulic Basin Agency (ABHS), during a meeting organized by the wilaya of the Fès-Meknès region.
Once completed, these works will increase the current total storage capacity of the BHS, which is 5.549 billion m³, to more than 8 billion. In addition, 28 small dams are planned in the region, still within the framework of the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program, said the director of the ABHS.
According to the breakdown, the province of Ifrane, the prefecture of Meknès, as well as the provinces of El Hajeb and Boulmane, will each benefit from a dam, while the provinces of Sefrou, Taza and Taounate will each have two dams and the province of Boulemane will benefit from 19 dams.
The construction of these dams aims, among other things, to support and diversify the sources of drinking water supply, to accompany the demand for this precious commodity, to guarantee water security and to reduce the effects of climate change.
