Morocco Faces Extreme Water Scarcity Risk by 2040, Report Warns

Morocco is one of the countries most affected by climate change. In less than 20 years, the country will experience a severe water shortage.
The alert was raised by the Economist Intelligence Unit, which published a report on environmental threats in Africa, specifying that the North and the Mediterranean region in general were already in the projections of the geographical areas most exposed to high and extreme levels of water scarcity.
More specifically, the report classifies Morocco in the regions most affected by water scarcity. Thus, the kingdom is cited in the "extremely high" risk zone with a consumption exceeding 80% of its water resources.
This worrying situation is the result of "rapid urbanization, population growth, climate change and economic development" which are putting pressure on water supply systems, the study notes.
According to the data, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya are the only African countries to suffer this threat, it is specified.
