Morocco Eyes Spain's 4-Phase Plan for Gradual Easing of Lockdown Measures

Morocco, one of the confined countries that is preparing to approach the exit from confinement on May 20, could take inspiration from Spain, which on Tuesday, April 28, developed the roadmap for the gradual deconfinement of the country. The process, divided into four phases, started on Sunday, April 26, and will end in June.

In the best case scenario, the phase of de-escalation towards the new normal will have a minimum duration of six weeks and a maximum of eight weeks for the entire Spanish territory, declares Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, specifying that the transition from one phase to another would depend on the evolution of the covid-19 pandemic.

Spain is currently in phase 0 where children under 14 have been allowed to go for a walk, with the possibility of exercising alone outdoors, or walking with members of the same household on Sundays. The end of this phase will be marked by the gradual reopening of shops, restaurants, hotels, cultural venues while strictly respecting attendance limits and safety distances.

According to Pedro Sanchez, schools will remain closed until September, except for remedial activities or for children under 6 whose two parents cannot telework. By the end of the process, travel will only be allowed for Spaniards within their province, while the use of masks will be highly recommended, especially on public transport, it is specified.

Even if Morocco and Spain are not affected in the same proportions by covid-19, the kingdom could model its exit plan from confinement on the roadmap for the gradual deconfinement of the Iberian country. This will allow the kingdom to protect not only the health and lives of Moroccans, but also to gradually revive the Moroccan economy.
