Morocco Eyes Potential Permanent Seat in UN Security Council Expansion

Morocco could soon join the UN Security Council as a permanent member. This prospect is linked to a project to expand this body in order to better reflect the current geopolitical power relations and to give a greater place to the different regions of the world.
Several factors argue in favor of this candidacy. First, the Security Council is the subject of an expansion project aimed at better reflecting the current power relations and granting a greater place to the different regions of the world. Then, the potential return of the former US president to the White House could play a decisive role. The latter had indeed displayed a willingness to strengthen the United States’ alliances with countries like Morocco, considered as key players to defend American interests in the face of international challenges.
The close ties woven between Rabat and Washington, particularly in the field of military and security cooperation, could thus translate into American support for the Moroccan candidacy, estimates Hespress. Morocco has other assets: its commitment to the fight against terrorism, its action in the face of climate change and its efforts for regional stability make it a serious candidate.
This possible accession of Morocco to the Security Council is part of a broader context of demands for better representation of Africa within the UN body. The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has also expressed her country’s support for the allocation of two permanent seats to African countries. A demand relayed by many countries on the continent and by António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, who denounces a "historical injustice" towards Africa.
