Morocco Expands Rail Network: Tangier-Tetouan Line Planned in Northern Provinces

The National Railway Office (ONCF) has launched an ambitious project to extend the rail network in the northern provinces of Morocco.
This initiative, which is part of the Tanger-Métropole program launched by King Mohammed VI in 2013, aims to connect the cities of Tangier and Tetouan by a modern and efficient rail line.
The project includes two main components:
• Urban rail service in Tangier: Double track between the Tangier LGV station, the future Melloussa station and the new city of Chrafat. Creation of a line connecting Tangier to the Gueznaya industrial zone.
• Tangier-Tetouan rail link: Establishment of a rail line connecting the future Chrafat station to the city of Tetouan.
This long-awaited link will help open up the city of Tetouan and facilitate travel between the two major urban centers in the north of the country.
The feasibility and preliminary design studies, which have been entrusted to specialized firms, will take into account various criteria, including the optimal route of the line, the viability of the project and traffic projections at three deadlines: 2030, 2035 and 2040.
The speed of the trains on this new line is estimated at 160 kilometers per hour, which will significantly reduce travel time between Tangier and Tetouan.
Beyond its regional dimension, this project is also part of the perspective of hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup in Morocco.
