Morocco Expands Highway Network Ahead of 2030 World Cup Co-Hosting

Morocco is working to strengthen its road and highway network, in preparation for the 2030 World Cup that it is organizing alongside Spain and Portugal.
Currently, Morocco has a highway network of 2,000 km, said Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, during an oral question session at the House of Representatives, ensuring that his department is working to maintain and strengthen road infrastructure in accordance with safety standards, in order to ensure traffic fluidity in anticipation of the 2030 World Cup.
Baraka also presented the strategic vision for the development of the road network by 2040 and the national plan for road infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of these documents which aim to upgrade the kingdom’s road infrastructure, through the realization of technical and financial studies of road projects. Regarding highways, many projects are underway, including the Guercif-Nador highway and the extension of the highway connecting Tit Mellil to Berrechid, bypassing Casablanca.
The studies of the Marrakech-Beni Mellal highway project as well as other highway projects have already been launched, added the minister who also stressed the importance of infrastructure maintenance. Each year, 500 million dirhams are dedicated to the rehabilitation of roads in order to ensure the safety and comfort of road and highway users, he concluded.
