Morocco Establishes Scientific Advisory Board for Cannabis Legalization

The Moroccan authorities set up on Saturday in Tangier, a scientific advisory body responsible for providing technical guidance in the implementation of Law No. 13.21 on the legal uses of cannabis in the Kingdom.

Composed of doctors from various specialties, pharmacists, lawyers, economists, civil society actors as well as journalists, this body has the mission of conducting consultations with a view to the promulgation of a law that takes into account the scientific and medical aspects in order to guarantee the societal interest at all levels, the body said in a statement on Monday.

The mission of the body will be advisory, based on the reports it will produce, which will include the scientific, medical, industrial, therapeutic and societal aspects, "benefiting from the experiences of the countries that have preceded us," said Rabii Redouane, professor of medicine at the Mohammed VI University of Casablanca and coordinator of the body.

The Moroccan legislator, farmers, manufacturers as well as investors who intend to invest in this promising sector will be associated with the work of this technical committee.

In terms of the vision set out in its charter of action, the scientific advisory body is already counting on raising awareness among a set of essential actors for the success of the cannabis legalization project, the statement revealed.

In the strategy it intends to deploy to support the adoption of Law No. 13.21, the advisory body plans a legal framework as a vector of suggestion, advocacy and partnerships with public and private institutions and with national and international companies, laboratories and research centers.

This strategy will notably contribute to a correct and healthy understanding of all the possibilities offered by this plant for uses related to human health and to the broad awareness of the reality of the multiple health alternatives in several medical disciplines, the same source specified.

In short, the advisory body thus put in place will serve as the locomotive for the process of enacting Law No. 13.21 and its proper implementation, the text of the body recalls, which also concludes that it will also focus on the best ways of dialogue intended to persuade the targets on the danger.

To this end, warns the same press release, the members of the advisory body will rely on scientific evidence and on all international experiences and scientific opinions on health matters.
