Morocco Erects New Fence to Bolster Security at Ceuta Border After Migration Crisis

Morocco has just built a new fence to strengthen security on the border with Ceuta, a little more than two months after the migration crisis in May.
The fence "is made of concertinas and constitutes a deterrent for migrants who wish to cross the border irregularly," says a statement from the Ceuta and Melilla Observatory of the Institute of Security and Culture. This infrastructure is a response to the migration crisis that occurred in May with the massive arrival of migrants, mostly minors, in the city of Ceuta.

The strengthening of the border with Ceuta seems to indicate that "Rabat wants to return to the path of collaboration with Spain and the EU," the statement adds. "Europe finances the training and equipment of the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie agents, intended for border security and the fight against the persistent threat of terrorism," the statement recalls.

The Observatory also supports that "this gesture will help to appease the diplomatic crisis between Morocco and Spain, but will not put an end to the complicated border relationship" between the two countries.
