Morocco Ensures Ample Food Supply and Stable Prices for Ramadan

There will be neither shortages, nor speculation, on goods and products throughout the month of Ramadan. The inter-ministerial commission in charge of monitoring supply, prices and quality and price control operations has met and taken the necessary measures in this regard, it is assured.

The markets are normally supplied with all goods and products, with an offer that largely covers the needs during Ramadan. This "will make it possible to meet the demand for all goods and products," said the Department of General Affairs and Governance of the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Public Administration Reform in a press release.

The supply of cereals and legumes corresponds to "the consumption of 4 months, without taking into account the quantities currently being imported after the suspension of customs duties," the statement explains. As for fruits and vegetables, "the estimated production is largely sufficient to cover the needs until the end of 2020." Regarding fish, we will have to wait until the end of the state of emergency to determine the resumption of fishing, reports the MAP.

The other aspect that the commission has looked into is related to product prices. In this area, the commission said it had noted "the stabilization of prices compared to the previous weeks," while noting that "the average vegetable prices continue to decline compared to the previous week, reaching rates of +6% for green onions, -4% for tomatoes and more than -3% for potatoes".

The commission will continue to hold regular meetings to monitor "the evolution of the market situation, the level of supply and prices and the balance sheet of the control commissions’ interventions". The aim is to detect and deal with any type of fraud, monopolization, speculation or price manipulation.
