Morocco’s Energy Security Unaffected by Algeria’s Gas Pipeline Decision, Experts Say

Following the termination of the GME contract by the Algerian authorities, experts have reassured that this decision will have no impact on the supply of electricity to Morocco.
Reactions are multiplying since the announcement of Algeria. First, it was the management of the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) and the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) who indicated that this decision will have in the immediate future only a negligible impact on the performance of the national electricity system.
In the columns of the daily Assabah, Mehdi Daoudi, Engineer and expert in energy issues, the decision emanating from the Algerian presidency aims to undermine the interests of the Kingdom, within the framework of the hostility of the eastern neighbor towards our country, hostility recently translated by the rupture of diplomatic relations.
According to the expert, the biggest loser of the non-renewal of the GME is indeed Algeria and not Morocco, as the eastern neighbor is in urgent need to sell its gas, demanded today on the European markets given the increase in the world price. The specialist thus recalls that this gas pipeline conveyed 13 to 15 billion m³ of gas from Algeria to Spain, passing through Morocco.
