Morocco’s Energy Bill Drops 21.8% Amid Falling Oil Prices and Reduced Imports

Over the first four months of 2020, the energy bill stood at 20.45 billion dirhams (MMDH), down 21.8% compared to the same period in 2019. According to the Office des Changes, this decline is mainly due to the decrease in supplies of gas-oil and fuel-oil of nearly 3.8 MMDH.
In its recent bulletin on foreign trade indicators, the Office des Changes points out that "this development is explained by the effect of falling prices of 19% (4,575 DH/T at the end of April 2020" against 5,648 DH/T a year earlier). The same goes for "the quantities imported which also showed a 12.5% decline," reports the MAP.
As for imports of goods, they fell by 12.6% to 147.74 MMDH, following the decline in imports of capital goods (- 7.8 MMDH), energy products (- 5.7 MMDH), finished consumer goods (- 5.4 MMDH), semi-products (- 4.4 MMDH) and raw materials (- 1.7 MMDH). On the other hand, food purchases increased by more than 3.9 MMDH, the same source specifies.
