Morocco Emerges as Top African Investor, Doubling Continental Investments in a Decade

Over the past ten years, investments by Moroccan companies in the African continent have increased considerably. Thus, Morocco has become one of the leading investors in several economic zones.
Between 2009 and 2019, Moroccan direct investments in Africa grew by an average of 8.3% per year, rising from 3 billion dirhams in 2009 to 6.8 billion in 2019, according to Mondafrique. In addition, around 60% of the direct foreign investments (FDI) made by Moroccan entrepreneurs over the past decade are held in Africa, according to the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF), under the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Today, around thirty countries in Africa benefit from Moroccan investments, compared to nine countries in 2009, with West Africa in the lead. Côte d’Ivoire, Chad and Senegal account for more than half of the flows realized in 2019. The Banking, Telecommunications and Industry sectors, flagship business sectors for Moroccan companies in Africa, recorded around 74% of Moroccan investments administered on the African continent in 2019, the same source stressed.
