Morocco Emerges as Spain’s Top Electricity Exporter, Boosted by Renewable Energy

76% of electricity exchanges between the two countries are provided by the Kingdom. According to data from the semi-public Spanish operator, Red electrica de España, Morocco has become Spain’s main supplier of electricity.
With growing domestic demand, Morocco faced the risk of heavy dependence on electricity imports. The commissioning of many renewable energy generation projects, particularly with solar and wind power, has increased the electricity production capacity to 3,500 MW.
These projects include the Safi thermal power station, which alone covers 25% of domestic electricity needs, and the Noor Midelt and Noor Ouarzazate solar power stations.
In 2018, the Kingdom’s exports to Spain in terms of electricity reached 20,588 GWH (Gigawatt/hour), generating revenues estimated, according to the International Foreign Exchange Office’s Annual Report, at 158 million dirhams.
