Morocco Emerges as Key Player in Electric Vehicle Manufacturing for European Market

Slowly but surely, Morocco is establishing itself as an emerging country in terms of production, export, and distribution of batteries and electric vehicles.

The efforts of car manufacturers in Morocco to double the production of batteries and electric vehicles for export to Europe have contributed to the spread of this type of vehicle in the local market, according to a report by the International Energy Agency. However, these sales of electric cars in Morocco remain modest compared to other countries in the world. The report notes a "growth in sales in the Kingdom in 2024, alongside Egypt, which has increased their overall value on the African continent, while remaining below one percent compared to other types of vehicles."

For now, Morocco is not among the three main markets for electric cars. However, it "constitutes a platform for adding production capacity for these vehicles, alongside Southeast Asia and India," the report specifies, emphasizing that these regions have certainly attracted less investment so far due to weak local demand for batteries, but they "are now benefiting from growing interest from battery manufacturers."

"It is expected that 60% of the committed production capacity in other advanced economies will be added, due to increased demand and government support, including in Canada, other European countries, Korea, and Japan. As for the rest, more than 150 gigawatt-hours of committed production capacity is under construction in Southeast Asia, India, and Morocco," continues the International Energy Agency.

On a global scale, Korean companies dominate battery investments in the United States. They hold 40% of the production capacity, specifies the same source, adding that Korea’s share is expected to exceed 50% by 2030 thanks to additional investments.
