Morocco Emerges as Key Ally in Global Counter-Terrorism Efforts

The actions taken by Morocco with its partners make the kingdom a key player in the fight against terrorism. In addition, the fight against the financing of terrorism is a project that is taking shape in Rabat.
Thwarting of criminal projects, dismantling of several terrorist cells, contribution to the dismantling of terrorist cells in other countries, particularly France, Spain, the United States... Morocco has become a key player in the fight against terrorism. These numerous actions have allowed it to chair the International Forum on the Fight against Terrorism for the 3rd consecutive time, together with Canada. The mandate expires this year. The kingdom and several other countries are taking an active part in the international coalition against the terrorist organization Daesh.
Thanks to the international recognition of Morocco’s efforts, Rabat has been hosting the headquarters of the Office of Counter-Terrorism in Africa since June 2021. The latter has been tasked with working to develop and implement the United Nations counter-terrorism program, to strengthen the capacities of certain African countries in the fight against terrorism, particularly in the area of border security, investigations, prosecutions and prison administration, rehabilitation and reintegration. This will bring together Moroccan expertise and that of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to provide quality training for international experts.
August 2021: adoption by Morocco of the report on money laundering, human trafficking and migrant smuggling, which falls under the financial task force of the MENA region with the participation of the services of the Ministry of the Interior. With the support of the United Nations Office concerned with the fight against drugs and crime, two actions were planned as early as 2020: to arrive at a clear definition of these two crimes in this region and to put in place a regional strategy for the period 2020-2023, led by a working group composed of representatives from Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, Libya and Morocco.
