Morocco Embraces Digital Payments as Cash Use Plummets During Pandemic

The improvement in technology and security measures generated by the Covid crisis have fostered the confidence of Moroccans in digital payments. Growth is expected to continue even after the epidemic.
According to the Visa and HPS survey, Moroccan consumers are moving further and further away from cash and are trusting digital payments in stores and online during the pandemic.
The survey reveals that while the use of cash, especially for delivery, continues to decline (-86%), e-commerce and contactless payments have become democratized since the beginning of the pandemic, soaring by 74%, adding that the trend is likely to continue even after the crisis.
84% of consumers say they have high confidence in contactless payments for in-store purchases and delivery payments. For several reasons: speed, convenience, innovation and transparency, the same source indicates.
However, some fear misuse of cards in case of loss or theft. Indeed, the survey assures that 1/5 of the surveyed consumers claim to have suffered prejudice with their electronic means of payment, while 32% have received counterfeit products and 23% of them have been victims of fraud with a lost card.
Hence the importance of contacting customer service, informing your bank and deleting online profiles.
