Morocco’s Electricity Exports Surge 36.5% as Production Rebounds in 2021

After a decline in 2020, electricity production in Morocco rebounded in 2021, resulting in a 5.3% increase in production and a 36.5% increase in exports.
This growth takes into account the improvement in private production of 5.3%, that of ONEE of 11.9% and that of renewable energies of 5.2%, indicates the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF) in its latest economic note.
The foreign trade of the sector has, for its part, experienced a marked improvement in exports of 36.5% as well as a 19.6% decrease in imports, in a context of growth in net energy (5.6%). It should be noted that the balance of foreign trade in electrical energy has been in surplus for the second year. Last year, the volume of energy exported exceeded that of energy imported by nearly 24%.
Regarding the consumption of electrical energy, the latter increased by 5.5% at the end of 2021 after a decline of 1.8% at the end of 2020. Compared to 2019, we note an increase of 3.6%: 31,957 GWh in 2021 against 30,836 in 2019.
