Morocco’s Electric Car Market Lags Behind European Trend, Sales Remain Low

While Europeans are flocking to electric and hybrid cars, the opposite is true in Morocco. So far, Moroccans’ enthusiasm for electric and hybrid cars remains anecdotal.
Aujourd’hui le Maroc notes that the electric car is struggling to find its place in the hybrid/electric vehicle market in Morocco. Despite the initiatives that are succeeding one another to propel the electric car, such as the launch of the first 100% Moroccan "iSmart" intelligent charging station, and the enthusiasm of industrialists, sales are not yet following.
Statistics from the Association of Importers of Assembled Automotive Vehicles (AIVAM) show that the volume of hybrid/electric vehicle sales fell by 28% in 2020, a underperformance of -19.7% with 1,018 sales in 2020, compared to 1,417 registrations recorded in 2019. In 2018, it was 1,140 units sold, compared to 342 sales in 2017, the newspaper points out, specifying that the share of sales by type of powertrain, HEV/PHEV/EV, is only 0.9%, with fuel accounting for more than 92% and gasoline for 6.7%.
In the European market, in the fourth quarter of 2020, 16.5% of passenger cars in the EU were registered as electric vehicles, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). In 2020, it was more than 1.36 million new electric vehicles (EVs) sold on the European continent, an increase of +143.8% compared to 2019.
Germany, France and the United Kingdom are the three main markets with 394,943, 185,719 and 175,082 registrations respectively. As for hybrids, Germany sold 327,395 units, Italy 221,893 units and the United Kingdom totaled 219,628 sales.
