Morocco’s Economy Surges 6.6% in Q4 2021, Driven by Agriculture and Non-Agricultural Growth

Despite the rise in inflation and the slowdown in activities, the Moroccan economy remained solid. In the fourth quarter of 2021, the growth rate reached 6.6% instead of a decline of 5.1% a year earlier.
This performance is attributable to the strong increase of 18.9% in agricultural activity and 5.6% in non-agricultural activities, indicates HCP in its recent note on the national economic situation.
In detail, the value of the primary sector increased by 20.7% during the period instead of a 9% decline a year earlier. Agricultural activity increased by 18.9% instead of a 10.7% decline and that of fishing by 40.7% instead of an 11.5% increase.
The secondary sector, on the other hand, saw an increase of 5.2% instead of 0.9%, driven by the improvement in the values of electricity and water, construction and public works, manufacturing industries as well as the decline in that of the extractive industry.
As for the tertiary sector, it was marked by the increase in the added values of the services provided by the general public administration and social security by 5.4%, of the services of education, health and social action, and of the services rendered to households and businesses.
Furthermore, HCP noted that the activities of posts and telecommunications as well as financial and insurance services respectively decreased by 2% and 1.9%, after having recorded a decline of 1% and 2.2% a year earlier.
