Morocco Economist Calls for Bold Reforms to Strengthen Economy Post-Pandemic

Moroccan economist and academic Najib Akesbi stated that despite the negative consequences, the coronavirus pandemic offers an opportunity for policymakers to make some bold and essential reforms. This was during a videoconference organized by the Association for Development and Citizenship of Marrakech.
"Bold reforms to get out of the crisis". This is the theme of this videoconference during which the economist hinted that the reforms in question must "first focus on strengthening the Moroccan economic fabric and fighting against the rentier economy and unfair economic competition".
According to him, the covid-19 pandemic is an opportunity not to be missed in order to achieve "a new economic momentum and to think about realistic solutions". This will not only meet the needs of citizens, but also "diversify imports in order to reduce the kingdom’s trade deficit," reports the MAP.
Najib Akesbi stressed that the health crisis has succeeded in demonstrating the need to achieve "economic independence" of Morocco from its main economic partners who have been hit hard by the economic repercussions of the global health crisis. These are China, Spain, France and Italy, to name but a few.
Among the sectors for which the academic advocates a profound rehabilitation, there are the public sector, the most important sub-sectors of which remain "public health, education, housing and infrastructure in the rural world". He also suggests that the State review the current economic model, which seems to have shown its limits, even globally.
Regarding the deconfinement so eagerly awaited by Moroccans, Akesbi stressed that it must be well "planned and gradual". He insists on the need to "return to global planning, instead of the sectoral planning currently adopted".
