Morocco’s Economic Powerhouses: Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier Regions Generate 58% of GDP

The regional accounts for 2019 are now available. Greater Casablanca, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra and Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima are the three regions that contribute more than half of the Moroccan GDP.
The High Commission for Planning (HCP) has, in accordance with international national accounting standards, prepared the regional accounts for the year 2019. These accounts present the Gross Domestic Product by region.
Regional GDP: Casablanca in the lead
The regional accounts established for the year 2019 show for these three regions a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 58%.
In detail, some regions are advancing faster than others. Casablanca-Settat created 31.8% of the national wealth, while Rabat-Salé-Kénitra and Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima contributed respectively 15.3% and 10.9%, the HCP notes in its note.
Five regions generated 34.7% of GDP, namely the Regions of Marrakech-Safi with 8.5%, Fès-Meknès (8.4%), Souss-Massa (6.7%), Béni Mellal-Khénifra (6%) and the Oriental (5.1%).
The regions of Drâa-Tafilalet and the three southern regions contributed only 7.1% to the creation of GDP in value, with 2.6% and 4.5% respectively.
Under these conditions, disparities in the creation of wealth between regions have widened, the same source notes, noting that the average absolute gap (the average of the absolute differences between the GDP of the different regions and the average regional GDP) increased from 62.7 billion dirhams (MMDH) in 2018 to 63.9 MMDH in 2019.
