Morocco’s Ecology Minister Under Fire for Purchasing Luxury Diesel Vehicles

The Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, finds herself at the heart of a new controversy related to the acquisition of new company cars. Not only are they accused of being very expensive, but some of them also run on diesel.
This car acquisition affair comes after an initial scandal involving the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, which had already caused a stir due to a call for tenders for expensive vehicles.
Thus, Minister Benali launched, at the end of August, a call for tenders to acquire two luxury diesel-powered cars. The value of these vehicles exceeds 1.2 million dirhams. In addition, there is an order for hybrid cars for her collaborators.

This choice is surprising in a context of economic crisis, at a time when Morocco is striving to promote the transition to renewable energies. The irony of the situation is not lost on anyone: the official in charge of energy policy seems to disregard environmental considerations in her own travels.
The minister already has a fleet of luxury cars, some of which were recently acquired. This need for prestige comes after another member of her party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), recently obtained similar luxury vehicles.
