Morocco Eases Family Law Procedures for Expatriates

Morocco has decided to significantly ease administrative procedures in family law, particularly marriage, divorce and civil status, in favor of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs).
Good news for MREs. The Ministries of the Interior, Justice, Foreign Affairs and Moroccans Residing Abroad have signed a circular aimed at de-judicializing administrative procedures in family law, particularly divorce, marriage and civil status. This circular has been addressed to consular centers and diplomatic missions, local authorities, presidents of courts of first instance, attorney generals, prosecutors, as well as magistrates assigned to Moroccan embassies, reports La Vie éco.
According to the circular, spouses can now establish an addendum to the marriage contract with the consular services when the host country does not provide for the presence of two Muslim witnesses. One of the two spouses then deposits this addendum with the adouls and those in charge of executing the adoulaire functions in the consular services.
