Morocco Eases Car Import Rules for Retired Expats, Age Limits Remain

The Moroccan authorities have relaxed the measures concerning the 90% rebate on the clearance of cars imported by retired Moroccans residing abroad (MREs). However, the import of vehicles over five years old is still prohibited, except for vehicles up to ten years old meeting certain conditions.
"The nominative registration certificate which was mandatory for the request for the tax advantage is no longer the only constituent document of the file. Any document justifying the transfer of ownership of the vehicle bearing the name of the retired MRE is now accepted." To benefit from this advantage, the retired MRE must, among other conditions, be at least 60 years old and have resided abroad for at least ten years.

The retired MRE can only benefit from this advantage once. "The MREs meeting the conditions are required to present themselves in person to the customs services to complete the necessary formalities and submit their file, accompanied by the standard form. Powers of attorney are not accepted for customs clearance operations," details L’Économiste, specifying that only passenger cars with a seating capacity of 9 passengers including the driver are concerned by the measure.
Furthermore, the import of vehicles over 5 years old is still prohibited. However, vehicles up to a maximum of 10 years old can be cleared "provided they have a maximum of 10 seats," the daily notes.
