Morocco Drops 12 Spots in Global Tourism Ranking, Report Shows

A bombshell for Moroccan tourism! The latest report from the World Economic Forum reveals a worrying decline of the Kingdom in the tourism and travel development index for the year 2024. Relegated to 82nd place out of 119 countries, Morocco loses twelve places compared to 2019, a dizzying fall that raises questions.
During a parliamentary session, MP Nadia Thami from the Progress and Socialism group (PPS) did not mince her words in front of the Minister of Tourism, Fatima-Zahra Ammor. Relying on the report, she pointed to the "average" performance of Morocco, far from the ambitions displayed by the government. "Contrary to what is promoted internally," the report highlights several obstacles hindering the development of the sector.
Yet, tourism is a key component of the Moroccan economy, she says. A crucial source of foreign exchange and jobs, it is at the heart of national issues, particularly with the prospect of hosting major international events in the coming years.
Faced with this alarming finding, the MP calls for a complete overhaul of the tourism strategy. Investments in infrastructure, innovation, international marketing, diversification of the offer and price competitiveness are all avenues to explore to get the sector back on track. She thus questioned the minister on the concrete measures envisaged to "revive this sector and correct the dysfunctions it suffers from". The future of Moroccan tourism is at stake.
