Morocco Denies Rumors of ’Kosher Tax’ on Israeli Tourists

The rumor that Israeli tourists visiting Morocco would be subject to a tax in exchange for the issuance of the "Kosher Morocco Label" is completely false, the Casablanca Kosher Commission has just denied.
The matter sparked a controversy within the Jewish community, forcing the Kosher Commission to react to restore the truth. "There has never been any question of instituting a tax per person and per night in exchange for the issuance of the ’Kosher Morocco Label’ whose fees cannot in any way be equated with any tax whose establishment remains the responsibility of the law," said a statement from the Kosher Commission.
According to the note, the officials state that they are in line with their missions entrusted to them by the public authorities, specifying that the ecosystem put in place will not concern individuals who are free to act as they wish. Establishments can only deliver services deemed kosher after obtaining a "téoudah" authorization issued by the Kosher Commission, they added.
According to the clarification, "the collection of these fees has always served and will serve, according to the same source, to cover the costs induced by the issuance of the Kosher Morocco label, to contribute to the financing of the Jewish cult and to guarantee the kosher certification of the services provided. The documentation and forms relating to the issuance of the label will be published soon on the cacheroutemaroc.com website".
Finally, "it should be recalled that the creation of the Kosher Morocco label and the resulting organization, in particular the exclusivity of its granting by the Casablanca Kosher Commission, aims to put an end to the anarchy that prevailed in the sector of the supply of kosher services and which was detrimental to the tourists concerned in a context marked by beautiful prospects for the development of kosher tourism in Morocco," the note concluded.
