Morocco Denies Detection of UK COVID-19 Variant, Maintains Vigilance
The emergence in the United Kingdom of a new strain of Coronavirus following a mutation is causing panic everywhere, to the point that Morocco has decided to suspend flights between the two countries. But information has been circulating since then, claiming that this new variant of the virus has been detected in Morocco.
The Moroccan authorities deny this information, specifying that since the announcement of the appearance of this strain in the United Kingdom, vigilance has been particularly high, and that the three laboratories of the monitoring system are closely following the mutations. Until Sunday, December 27 in the middle of the day, no virus corresponding to this mutation has yet been detected in the samples taken from Moroccan patients, reports Médias24 from an authorized source.
On this issue, Dr. Moulay Saïd Afif, president of Infovac Maroc and the Moroccan Society of Medical Sciences, welcomed the Moroccan decision to suspend air links with the United Kingdom. "This strain is more contagious, from 40% to 70% according to observations. It is dangerous, because if it spreads, there will be more cases and more cases means arithmetically more intensive care and deaths. But the number of cases must decrease and the pressure on the health system must ease to allow it to focus calmly on the vaccination campaign," emphasizes the specialist. He calls for vigilance and compliance with the preventive measures in force, the same source specifies.
