In 2020, Morocco had 76 inmates on death row, 9 more than in 2019, according to data from the public prosecutor’s office.
Among them, two women and 19 were convicted of terrorist attacks that caused the death of 158 people, the latest report from the Presidency of the Public Prosecutor’s Office published this week said.
The report stresses that the judiciary only resorts to this sentence in "cases of extreme necessity", when the crime has a significant impact on the safety and security of people, such as premeditated murder associated with other crimes such as theft, rape or indecent assault with violence.
