Morocco Cuts Subsidies for Essential Goods: Butane Gas and Sugar Support Drops in 2020

Butane gas and sugar, two basic necessities, saw their subsidy burden decrease to 11.94 billion dirhams (MMDH) in 2020, after 12.917 MMDH in 2019, according to the latest information bulletin from the Compensation Fund.
The information document specifies that the subsidy burden for butane gas amounted to 8.694 last year, compared to 9.51 MMDH in 2019. This decrease, which shows a 9% decrease, is explained by the decline in butane gas prices and the 13% decrease in the unit subsidy during this period.
Regarding sugar, its compensation burden, both in value and quantity, decreased by 5% last year, compared to 2019. It follows that the sugar subsidy burden amounted to 3.248 MMDH at the end of last December, compared to 3.407 MMDH a year earlier.
The latest information bulletin from the Compensation Fund also notes that at the end of December 2020, the payment of outstanding subsidy files for butane gas and sugar products amounted to more than 11.05 MMDH, or 8.3 for butane gas and 2.75 for sugar.
Furthermore, the outstanding subsidy files relating to butane gas and sugar for the same period amount to 3.484 MMDH, including 2.1 MMDH for butane gas and 1.38 MMDH for sugar.
