Morocco’s Cultural Sector Faces 100,000 Job Losses Amid COVID-19 Crisis

The crisis related to Covid-19 has exacerbated the problems facing the cultural sector for many years, according to a study just published by the Federation of Cultural and Creative Industries of the CGEM (FICC), in partnership with the Wallonie Bruxelles agency in Rabat.
From restructuring to financing, through the digital transformation of cultural production and creation methods, no area of the cultural sector has been spared by the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the results of the study entitled "What transformations for the ICC in Morocco?" and conducted by the CGEM (FICC), more than 100,000 direct jobs are threatened with disappearance. About 1,100 companies have recorded a 70% drop in their turnover. And this concerns publishing, the performing arts, audiovisual and contemporary music.
To save the sector, the federation proposes to strengthen the governance and the market of the cultural industries with more professionalization and openness to the international and digital spheres. It calls for and encourages the establishment of groups that link culture, education and youth spaces, in order to enhance local potential. But with the pandemic and the maintenance of restrictive measures, it is difficult for local cultural markets to thrive.
