Morocco to Create Unit for Managing Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project

Morocco plans to create, within the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), a department exclusively dedicated to the management of national oil and gas projects, including the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline.

"It’s in the works. It’s a new entity that will be created to take care of the downstream activity," said an anonymous source from the Office to the British specialized site S&P Global Platts, specifying that this new department will also be responsible for the gas delivery project via the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline that will serve the European market.

According to the same source, "the industrial sector in Morocco is developing rapidly and gas will be an important part of this growth." This is why Morocco is also active in the construction of networks to transport gas to industrial hubs (automotive and aeronautics).

Morocco has conventional and unconventional gas resources estimated at around 300 Tcf, which it intends to explore and develop with the help of investors, said the ONHYM source, stating that the kingdom’s project to install a floating regasification and storage unit off the Atlantic coast has "generated a lot of interest." The project to supply electricity from solar and wind energy produced in the United Kingdom is also under evaluation, he recalled.

After Algeria’s decision not to renew the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline (GME), Morocco is multiplying its research to continue to supply itself with gas. According to S&P Global Platts, the Spanish company, Naturgy, indicated on Wednesday that it is continuing negotiations with the two countries to possibly obtain an extension of the GME concession contract.
